A perennial, reed-like herb, Cardamom grows wild and is cultivated in India and Sri Lanka. It grows up to 4 meters (13 feet) and has long, green silky blades, small yellow flowers with a violet tip, and a large, fleshy rhizome, similar to ginger. Oblong gray fruits follow the flowers, each containing many seeds. Cardamom has been long used since ancient times. It was popular among the Egyptian, who used Cardamom in perfumes and incense. Today, the seeds are an important ingredient in Middle Eastern and Asian cooking.
The seeds have a unique warm, aroma that offer a sweet, unique floral flavour to some of my favourite dishes. This spice is used as a digestive aid, and is well known for healing properties. Commonly used to freshen your breath after a dinner much like a mint, minus the candy part. In India it is common practice to chew cardamom pods between meals to promote healthy teeth and gums. Cardamom essential oil works great against a common problem known as halitosis, fighting against oral pathogenic bacteria like Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicansdone. In addition, the active component cineole, which is found in cardamom oil, has strong antiseptic properties that successfully eliminated the bad bacteria linked to bad breath and infection. Cadamom also help prevent the development of dental cavities. Some studies have shown that in some cases, it can even reserve cavities and tooth decay. Not only does it kill harmful bacteria in your mouth, but chewing the actual cardamom seed cleans the teeth, and promotes saliva production, which can aid in digestion. Cardamom is used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of digestive issues. The methanolic extract from the spice is the component that helps control gastrointestinal disorders, such as acidity, and stomach cramps.
