Frequently Asked Questions
Are all of John-Addison's ingredients certified organic ?
We do our best to provide our customers with the cleanest and purest ingredients. Most of our ingredients are USDA certified organic, but some ingredients - such as Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda), Magnesium Chloride (epsom salts), and Dead Sea salt, are all minerals of the Earth, and cannot be labelled as "organic". There are processes that are required to create these ingredients (such as drying, crushing, pressing etc.), but there are no additional additives or preservatives added to our products. Our products are clean, and pure in their simplest form.
Where do you source your ingredients ?
Most of our ingredients are purchased directly from our Canadian suppliers, but many of those products have different countries of origin. For example, our Hemp Seed oil is from Canada, our Jojoba oil is from Argentina, Aloe Vera is from USA, Extra Virgin Olive oil is from Spain, and Dead Sea salt is from Israel. We mindfully collect information about these ingredients, and do our best to give our customers knowledge, and the power to make good decisions.
Are your ingredients hypoallergenic ?
All of our ingredients are simple, and pure without any additives or preservatives, which means it is gentle enough for the most sensitive skin. However, some of our products do contain nut oils such as Coconut, and Sweet Almond oil. Those with nut allergies should be aware that our ingredients may contain traces of nuts, or may be processed in facilities that may have exposure to nuts. We recommend doing a spot test on the skin on the inside of your wrist, as everyone reacts to things differently. Its best to be safe, and do a test if you have sensitivities. Some people may have sensitivities to essential oils, and may have adverse reactions due to a detoxing effect they can have on the body. Everyone reacts differently, so we suggest trying a small amount before fully committing to a new product, if you have sensitivities.
Are your products safe for babies and children ?
We have designed several products with children and babies in mind. Young children have thin skin that is easily permeated. Essential oils are very potent, and should be used with caution around young children and pets. As you know, babies have the most sensitive skin, which is why we have created several unscented, organic body care products - Baby Butter, After Sun Spray, Lip Balm, Freshen Up Spray. These products are safe to use in the diaper area, body, and even face. Our formula is free from any synthetic ingredients including fragrances, SLS, parabens, dyes and any preservatives or additives. We recommend doing a spot test on the skin before using products on young children. Always dilute essential oils with carrier oils when using on children.
Are Essential oils safe for children and babies ?
Essential oils are strong, but with the right dilution can be extremely beneficial for children and babies. Some oils are not safe for using on or around young children, so be sure to do some research before using them. Essential oils can be difused in the room, or applied topically (bottoms of feet before bed is the most safe). When using essential oils topically, they require proper dilution. These Kid Safe essential oils are safe for use on the following:
Babies 6 Months + Lavender, Chamomile, Lemon, Sweet Orange, Geranium, Cedarwood, Palmarosa
Children 10 Years + Rosemary, Eucalyptus
* Be cautious with essential oils or products containing the following : Sage & Wintergreen
Never give essential oils to be ingested orally by children. For topical application, always use with proper dilution with carrier oils. Young children have thinner skin than adults, and are most sensitive to essential oils. We advise to test a small area of the skin for any adverse reactions. Less is more when using essential oils on children. See our dilution guide for details.
What are Essential oils ?
Essential oils are oils made from the seeds, flowers, stems, roots, and bark of natural plants. It is made in a distilled-fashion by steam, or cold-press process. They are extremely potent, and very powerful. They can be used topically, or ingested, they smell great, and possess a wide range of healing properties. These benefits include improving complexion of skin, cell growth and renewal, ease aches and pains, balance emotions, relieve stress, and can even fight bacteria and other forms of infection. Essential oils are an ancient knowledge of therapeutic healing, and can be very beneficial to the body, and the soul. Keep in mind that these oils are very powerful, and can have harmful effects if not used properly. Use a few drops in an electric diffuser of your choice, simply smelling the essential oil aroma can have uplifting and calming effects. When applying topically, be sure to dilute essential oils with carrier oils, and do some research before using any if you have existing health problems. For external use only, and keep out of reach of children, and pets.
Are Essential Oils and Body Oils the same ?
They are different. While they are both extracted directly from the plant itself, essential oils are fragrant, and body oils, or carrier oils, are not. Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils, and help "carry" them onto the skin. Essential oils should always be diluted, especially when using them on young children. Body oils do not need to be diluted, they are packed with vitamins and minerals natural to the plant it is made from, and have a variety of health benefits when used topically, on the skin, or in the hair. Only a few drops are needed to brighten, hydrate, and nourish the skin. When using oils, less is always more. Always dilute essential oils with carrier oils.
Where are your products made ?
We are local to Vancouver BC, all of our products are handcrafted, mixed, poured, or sewn in our workshop studio, in small batches to ensure freshness and quality. We strive to remain sustainable and we strongly encourage our customers to recycle boxes, plastics, packaging papers, bottles and jars.
How do you use your products ?
All of our products are versatile. Face products can be used on the body, body products can be used in the hair, etc. Body butters, and body oils should be used after washing to replenish naturals oils stripped by using soap and hot water. Body oils can be used before showering to retain moisture, and protect the outer dermis from being damaged, and can also be used as hair treatments for hydration and conditioning. Essential oils are to be diluted with carrier oils or carrier butters, and applied to face, body and hair as needed. They can also be diffused and made into blends. So, all in all, our products are versatile, safe, and organic, which means they can be used anyway, anywhere on the body. Except the eyes, be aware of the sensitivity of the eye area.
What is organic skincare ?
Organic skincare products are made with all-natural, chemical-free ingredients. Our ingredients are pure, and free from any preservatives, dyes, and additives, they are extracted directly from the Earth and mixed into a small glass bottle. The skin is completely porous, which means it is extremely absorbent. We believe that the absorption of our all-natural and organic products are very beneficial for the body, and especially for the skin. The effects of environmental damages, poor diet choice, and dehydration are all real life factors that affect the condition and appearance of your skin. Hydrated skin looks brighter, younger, and healthier.
Why are organic skincare products better than "regular" skincare products ?
We believe that organic skincare products are superior to other "conventional" or "regular" skincare products because of their contents. Since the skin is so absorbent, we should always be mindful of what we put on our skin, just as we are with the food that goes inside our bodies. Many conventional cosmetic and body care products are created with chemicals, in a lab, with ingredients in which consumers know nothing about, and cannot even pronounce their names. Many of these chemicals are fillers, and are made to replicate organic ingredients, in a cheaper, lesser form. These products can be harmful to your health, especially mixing many chemicals with many products. Chemicals react to one another, and even in small doses, their effects can cause rashes, allergies, hives, and other skin ailments. Many companies care more about profits than creating reputable wellness products. We believe in using non-harmful, simple, organic ingredients that you can understand, made from the Earth, and not in a lab.
Are any of your products unscented ?
We have a few products which are made without any essential oils, and are gentle, and scent-free. Many of us have sensitive skin, and with that in mind, we have formulated a mixture of beneficial ingredients, that are naturally scent-free. Beeswax does have a mild honey scent, but it is in its purest, most natural form - with no additives whatsoever. We have even created a carrier body butter, to be used with essential oils of your choice. Customers can add a little or a lot of essential oils to any of our unscented body and lip butters, or carrier body oils. We offer a few body care products that are unscented, in blue glass bottles - After Sun Spray & Freshen Up Body Spray, these are safe to use on ultra sensitive skin, on young children and infants.
Do any of your products have essential oils ?
Yes, we use therapeutic-grade organic essential oils in many of our products. We strongly believe in the healing properties of these oils, and use them to benefit from when applied topically - and they happen to smell great. Many of our products are lightly scented with essential oils, but we also offer products with strong essential oils, to manage pain, strengthen cells, and rejuvenate the outer skin dermis. Essential oils are very powerful - for example, it takes 50 lemons to make just one 15mL of Lemon essential oils. Its loaded with vitamin C, and you can imagine the powerful health effects just one drop would have on your body. All of our products containing essential oils are carefully diluted with the potency and strength of the oils in mind. Be cautious of using products with essential oils if you are on medication, or have exsisting health issues. Please do some research on the particular oil before using it. We recommend always diluting essential oils with carrier oils. Also, keep out of reach of young children and pets, as some oils are not suitable to be diffused or applied topically on children.
Do you test products on animals ?
No, we are strongly against testing on animals. Although we use organic and natural ingredients that potentially would not do any harm, we do not support the "use" of any products on animals. We do not use any ingredients that are tested on animals, nor do we do any testing of our own. We stand for both animal and human rights, and feel very strongly about creating a balanced, and equal world for all.
