Nearly forty plants are within the lavender family, native to Europe, Africa, the Mediterranean, and parts of Asia. It is has been used for over 2,500 years for its therapeutic and medicinal properties. Early and modern aromatherapy texts advocate for lavender’s use as an antibacterial essential oil. The leaves and stems of the plant were used to prepare decoctions against digestive system diseases and rheumatism, and lavender was valued for its cosmetic purposes. The Lavender plant is a woody evergreen shrub, up to 1 meter tall, with pale green, narrow linear leaves and violet blue flowers. The entire plant is covered with oil glands, which are in the star shaped hairs that cover the plant. Lavender has been used since ancient times, and the Romans added lavender to their bath water, hence the name from the Latin lavare, 'to wash'.

Lavender is high in antioxidants, which helps slow the aging process, helping diminish wrinkles, fine lines, age spots and dark circles. It enhances blood circulation throughout the body, which can increase hair growth, encourage new cell production. Anti-inflammatory properties reduce inflammation and redness in the skin, leaving the skin looking even and toned. Lavender essential oil also helps relieve pain and tension, improve brain function and reduces anxiety and emotional stress levels. It is gentle, and safe for the most sensitive skin. Applying lavender essential oil to wounds, cuts, and bruises can speed the body's healing time. It is versatile, powerful, and calming. Diffusing Lavender essential oil is beneficial for improving sleep patterns, alleviating headaches, and relaxing the mind. It also helps eliminate insomnia and poor sleeping habits. Lavender's ability to calm the nervous system helps alleviate stress and anxiety, tension headaches, and overall pain. Applying lavender essential oils to the abdomen area can help alleviate menstrual cycle cramping and pain.
