as a company
Knowledge is power. It sounds cliche, but it is so true. After studying textiles for many years, and after viewing the mass manufacturing process first hand, I came to the realization that humans are greatly disconnected with the reality of where our products come from. Not only is the processing not sustainable, and detrimental to the balance of the Earth, but the harmful chemicals that are used in the process have damaging effects on our bodies. Knowing this gave us the confidence to execute our dreams of creating alternate options, not just for us, but for our family, our friends, and for the future.
Thus, John-Addison was born. We, as a partnership, decided to create our ideal company - one that values the importance of trust, and overall wellness. The concept is really quite simple, we want to create a positive presence of the Earth, for the Earth - no poisonous chemicals, no toxic waste, no testing on animals, no unnecessary additives, and ultimately, no harm done. We want to create a community of people who care about the well being of their homes, their families, and essentially, themselves. Our desire to create this type of environment for ourselves, and for our children is what drives us to do what we do. We want to be a voice for those who do not know how to speak for themselves. We want everyone to realize that we all have voices, and it is important to know that they all matter. Every choice we make in our lives, the products we buy, can either benefit us, or alternatively, hurt us. The power of choice is a gift John-Addison wants to bring into every home.
We, as a whole, are a compassionate, and trusting species. From a young age, we are conditioned to believe that the corporations that run our world are trustworthy, and reliable. We are lead to believe that they have our best interests at heart, and our health is their priority - this is far from the truth. They disguise these messages through advertisements and marketing, all of which we subconsciously react to. If we buy this laundry detergent, then we will have carefree and sun-filled days with laughter - not rashes or internal hormonal imbalances. If we eat this brand of breakfast cereal, we will stay young, and give our children what they need - not diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity. Its really not our fault, the marketing is certainly effective. It is scientifically proven that we, without knowing, associate different colour schemes with different emotions. Its not our fault, its the way our brains are wired. We happily invite harmful products into our lives, into our homes and into our bodies, simply because we do not know the facts. The fact of the matter is, corporations care solely about making money. The truth is a little scary.
During my pregnancy, I took complete control over what I ate, and what I put on my body. Naturally, my instincts as a new mother is to protect my young from any, and all harm. Knowing about how porous the skin is, and how it absorbs everything you put on it (including chemicals from conventional clothing), was both a gift, and a curse during my pregnancy. Since I was not able to find the cosmetic products I wanted, I created them. I wanted to use and consume products with ingredients that I could read, and understand. Ingredient labels on food and skincare products are not comprehensible. Nearly all of the ingredients are chemical compounds made in a lab, by scientists wearing white lab coats. I used to believe, as a child, that these ingredients were not made to be legible because they were, in fact, “company secrets”, and they didn’t want people to know what they were, so competitors couldn’t take their “secrets”. Little did I now how close to the truth that was, not to preserve their recipes, but to keep the general public in the dark. Well, we are no longer children, we are responsible for making good decisions, and we can now understand the consequences of using these products with chemical ingredients. Many of us suffer from skin conditions such as Eczema, Psoriasis, allergies, hives, and acne, all of which can be caused or triggered by chemicals in our food, clothing, and cometic products. These chemicals in “small doses” are considered to be “safe”, but what about the chemical reactions between all of the chemical traces in our lives? Chemistry is pretty straight forward, different chemicals, with different properties, create different reactions, when introduced to each other. You cannot deny that these chemical reactions happen on not only your skin, but internally as well. Our bodies are sometimes resilient, but they are also vulnerable, and sensitive. Our organs work together, much like a machine, or a computer, which is why we need to ensure that all our parts are working at their highest potential. We only have one life, it may be short, it may be long, that much is out of our control. Thankfully, we have the power of choice, and the option to choose how we live our daily lives. Ultimately, the choice is up to you.
We hope our customers can see the value in whole, simple, and organic wellness. Instead of chemicals, we use ingredients rich in vitamins and minerals, all of which are harvested sustainably from the Earth. Our ingredients are botanicals that have been used for hundreds, even thousands of years, dating back to Egyptian and biblical times. First Nations ancestry believed in the healing power of the Earth. Every species of plant and animal has a purpose and a spirit. Appreciation for the natural-growing, and wild botanicals of the Earth is in our nature. Its important to remember that we are not outsiders, who can go and visit nature, but rather, we are participants, and a collective whole. Everything we consume, plastics and all, eventually go back to the Earth, as potential food for other species. What is our contribution as humans? We all make daily contributions to this global village, and ultimately, it is up to us to decide your contribution to the world.
Think about the world our children are inheriting, the issues and difficulties ahead. Ask yourself, how can we help shape the future?
